When it applies: who needs a separate card to pay for Claude
Claude Pro is a subscription tool. It suits Hong Kong users who use it every day to write, organise research material and help with coding. Once you make Claude part of your workflow, payment is no longer just a question of whether the charge will go through, but of how to keep this recurring cost under control.
- Freelancers and consultants: tool costs and personal spending sit on the same credit card, which is hard to separate at year-end reconciliation. With a dedicated virtual card, transactions sort themselves.
- Small teams: members each pay with their own card, and once someone leaves or a project ends, no one remembers to cancel. Using one card that can be frozen centrally makes it easier to cut off.
- People who do not want to tie their main credit card to overseas merchants: locally issued credit cards may face declines at some overseas online merchants, extra 3DS checks, or be flagged by risk controls as high-risk cross-border transactions. A virtual card with a set spending limit keeps the risk contained.
- People who need to see charges as they happen: the biggest risk with subscriptions is forgetting to cancel. Real-time transaction alerts and the ability to freeze the card let you know what happened the moment a charge is made.
If you are only trying Claude occasionally, you may not need a separate card. But if you plan to subscribe for several months in a row, the reconciliation and management benefits of a dedicated card will show.
Steps: complete everything in the MP App, do not register on this site
The whole process takes place in the MP App. This site does not handle any registration or payment. Follow these four steps:
- Download and register with MPChat: get the app from official channels and complete basic registration. This step creates an MP account, not a Claude account.
- Complete in-app identity verification: submit the required information as instructed by the app. Verification is a required step for using financial services and cannot be skipped. Fill in accurate details so it does not affect card activation later.
- Top up the MP Wallet with supported stablecoins (USDC / USDT): only top up with assets the app explicitly supports. Top-ups on the wrong chain or in the wrong currency may not be credited. Check the receiving details in the app before you proceed.
- Activate the MP Card in the app: once activated, get the card details and enter them on the Claude subscription page. The virtual card is ready to use and suits online payments; the physical card can be used for in-store spending and ATM.
After activation, you can manage spending limits, freeze the card and receive real-time transaction alerts in the MP App. When you spend, supported crypto assets are automatically converted to the local currency, and funds are held within a regulated trust framework. All fee-related information is subject to what is shown in the app at the time and to help.mp.net; this site does not quote prices.
Troubleshooting a failed payment: compare records on both sides
When a payment fails, the most common mistake is to look at only one side and jump to a conclusion. Check the information on the MP App and the Claude payment page side by side:
- First, check whether the MP App shows a transaction attempt: If there is a record but the status shows failed, the problem may be on the merchant side or in the verification step; if there is no record at all, the request did not reach the issuer, usually because the card details were entered incorrectly or the merchant blocked it before submission.
- Then look at the error message on the Claude page: The error code and description are clues from the merchant, but do not treat them as the final cause, because the merchant may not disclose risk-control details.
- When only one side has a record, do not assume "the money has been charged" or "nothing happened": Authorization and capture are different stages. The real-time notifications in the App can help you tell whether it is a pre-authorization or a captured charge.
- Check the card status: Whether it is frozen, whether the limit is too low, or whether it was just activated and is not yet effective. You can confirm these yourself in the App.
- Confirm the payment path: A web subscription and an in-app purchase are two different paths. The merchant description, verification method and refund entry point are all different. First confirm which path the button you clicked belongs to, then decide whether to use a virtual card.
If the records on both sides conflict and you cannot resolve it yourself, contact support through the in-App channel or help.mp.net. Have the transaction time and amount ready (based on what the App shows) so they can be compared.
Comparison with local payments: why subscriptions like Claude are not easy to pay with local tools
Everyday payments in Hong Kong are convenient, but the payment infrastructure for cross-border SaaS and AI tools does not overlap with the local wallet ecosystem. The comparison below explains common pain points:
| Local payment method | Everyday advantages | Pain points when paying for subscriptions like Claude |
|---|
| FPS | Fast local transfers, convenient for splitting bills among friends | Overseas subscriptions, US App Store, and ad platforms usually do not accept it; Claude's subscription page generally does not offer FPS |
| Octopus / local wallets | Smooth for transport and small shop purchases | Almost unusable for cross-border SaaS and AI tools; the payee is not in the local wallet network |
| Hong Kong-issued credit cards | High penetration, good acceptance by local merchants | Some merchants decline the card, require extra 3DS, or treat it as "high-risk cross-border" and block it; subscription renewals may suddenly fail |
| MP virtual card | Instant activation, suitable for online payments; limits, freezing, and real-time notifications are available in the App | Requires identity verification and deposit of a supported stablecoin first; as an overseas card, some merchants may still decline it, and success is not guaranteed |
This table is not saying local payments are bad. It points out a mismatch of use cases: FPS and Octopus solve local transfers and small purchases, while a Claude subscription goes through an overseas online payment. Instead of forcing it, use a card with clear boundaries to handle this kind of spending.
Things to Note: Separate the Verifiable from the Unverifiable
When using a virtual card to pay for Claude Pro, keep the following in mind so you don't mistake guesses for facts:
- Don't apply success stories from other AI products: The same card in the same city can produce completely different results on two AI products. A card that works with ChatGPT may not be handled the same way by Claude, and vice versa. Reusing a success screenshot across products is the most common source of misjudgement.
- Don't believe claims of "guaranteed approval": Any promotion that claims guaranteed success with no verification cannot be verified. Merchant risk control and issuer verification are independent steps, and no one can guarantee the outcome in advance.
- Always check fees in the App and on help.mp.net: This site does not quote prices, and does not list fee rates, card opening amounts or any approval rates. For actual fees, refer to what is shown in real time in the MP App.
- Someone needs to manage subscription renewals: Claude Pro is a recurring charge. We recommend setting an appropriate spending limit in the App and turning on real-time transaction alerts. When you no longer use it, you can first freeze the card, then cancel the subscription following the merchant's process.
- Team plans are a different matter: Enterprise verification and seat management are merchant rules. A virtual card only provides the payment credential. If you want to buy a team plan, confirm the merchant's verification requirements first, then decide how to arrange payment.
- Be truthful about funds and verification: Only top up with stablecoins supported by the App, and complete identity verification truthfully. Any attempt to bypass verification may result in the card being unusable or funds being blocked.
Look at the payment credential and the merchant rules separately, and you won't mistake "the card works" for "the subscription will definitely succeed", nor "this failure" for "the card has a problem".
